Nepenthes [(Rokko 'exotica' x boschiana) x veitchii "hose mountains"] x (veitchii "highland" x eymae "EP")
An incredibly complex hybrid that could grow into anything!
Seedlings with so much potential! October 2020
Seed parent: (Rokko 'exotica' x boschiana) x veitchii "hose mountains" owned by Carson Trexler
Pollen parent: veitchii "highland" x eymae "EP" owned by Carson Trexler
I have now reached the point in my Nepenthes hobby that I enjoy gambling on genetic lottery tickets! At least, that's what purchasing this INCREDIBLY complex hybrid felt like! Exotica Plants is already known for its complex hybrids - it would take a gifted mad scientist like Carson Trexler to cross two Exotica Plants together! The seeds were sown by Austin Smith 6/19/19 and I purchased these two seedlings from him via FaceBook. It is difficult to discern any interesting characteristics from the tiny pitchers at this age, but the leaves are curious - very thin, almost like paper! Excited to see how this grows out!
Update December 2020
The tiniest stripes?!
Really should have separated these two seedlings when they arrived...
After a longer acclimation period than usual (probably because it got bounced around quite a bit during shipping!) we finally have our first pitchers! Of course it is difficult to discern any characteristics of the mature pitchers at this stage, but there are a few faint stripes on the larger seedlings that give me a lot of hope. The leaves are strange... very long, thin, and strap-like, with very little narrowing at the petiole attachment to the main stem. These also appear to be a little sensitive to high light and I had to move them further away from the lights before it resumed pitchering.
Potted them up into their own pots! The root system on the larger seedlings was definitely impeding the growth on the smaller one.
Starting to recover from the re-pot! For some reason it keeps putting all its pitchers in this one corner.
