Nepenthes x Song of Melancholy

One of the most stunning Leilani Nepenthes!

The coloration on this hybrid is INSANE in person!

Such elegant lines!

The peristome remains flared with excellent color contrast - no bronzing!
Nepenthes x Song of Melancholy is a highly sought after Leilani Nepenthes that was a results of a wild breeding. The parentage is thought to be boschiana x (spectabilis x veitchii). When you watch videos touring Sam Estes' nursery, it is easy to see how such a fortuitous coupling could have happened! This Nepenthes wonderland was tragically destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 2018. It seems appropriate that one of Leilani's most famous hybrids should have such a fitting epithet.

Best plant mail EVER!

I purchased my MASSIVE rooted cutting from Sarracenia Northwest. The two nurseries used to work closely with one another and I am grateful that Sarracenia Northwest still carries so many Leilani Nepenthes. The quality of their rooted cuttings and packaging simply cannot be beat. Just look at the size and color this cutting straight out of the box!

Sarracenia Northwest says that they received a wide variety of forms in the original grex from Leilani. They kept two forms - the red form, which they kept as "Song of Melancholy, and an orange form, which they renamed "Chant de Linos".
Many more photos of this hybrid can be found in the cpphotofinder, but all of them are clear - this is a gorgeous, gorgeous hybrid. Photos really don't do it justice. The clarity of color carries throughout the entire life of each pitcher, which absolutely no bronzing or fading. Every line is graceful and elegant, as if sculpted. The pitchers can attain massive size - mine are still a mere 8" tall but the plant itself has already graduated to the floor of the grow tent and is rapidly growing past 2.5 feet in diameter. It is a very vigorous grower in intermediate conditions and would also do well as a houseplant. The stems and leaves are tough and leathery, covered in fine hairs. Nectar production is copious when happy! A truly magnificent plant!
