A gorgeous tropical terrestrial bladderwort that still hasn't flowered for me :(
Can you tell which pot was on the windowsill and which one was in the terrarium for several months?
I fell in love with Utricularia alpina when a particularly gorgeous specimen won the People's Choice award at a BACPS meeting several years ago. Although I purchased my alpina from California Carnivores shortly after that, it has never flowered for me. I keep crossing my fingers that it will bloom one of these days!
In an effort to dial in its ideal growing conditions, I divided my alpina into two during the last re-pot and placed one division in the warm intermediate greenhouse and one in the south-facing windowsill. The one on the windowsill appeared to be a touch more vigorous and had a nicer green tone to its leaves. I moved both divisions to the windowsill and eagerly await its flowers... perhaps after a winter "rest"!
Current Growing Conditions: South-Facing Living Room Window Light: ~260 - 460 PPFD or 16530 - 20110 Lux (depends on the weather outside) Humidity: ~80% night and 55% day Temperature: ~68F night and 90F day (depends on weather outside) Water: Keep moist but not wet Potting Mix: 100% long-fibered sphagnum - Don't be alarmed upon finding large round bulb-like growths in the media among the traps - those are normal! Fertilizer: MaxSea (1/4 tsp/gallon) once a month as foliar spray Additional Notes: Still waiting for flowers. Slows down slightly during the winter.
